I have been with the Little Rock Police Dept since June of 2000. I worked on patrol for four years. During that time I volunteered for various projects working in high crime areas as a plain clothes officer and on several jump out squads.
I applied for the K-9 squad and went through the tryouts in 2004. Being assigned to the K-9 unit is where I wanted to be. I was partnered with Gino who came from the Czech Republic. I got him when he was a 1 1/2 years old, was untrained and weighed 52 lbs. He is a sable colored German Shepherd weighing in now at 85 lbs.
After three months of training we hit the streets and haven't stopped. Gino is a patrol dog certified in apprehension, tracking, building, and area searches. Gino is also certified as a drug dog in meth, cocaine, marijuana, and heroin. We also do demonstrations at local schools around the area giving children a chance to be one on one with Gino. Not only is he my partner but a family member. Hopefully we will have about 3 to 4 more years together before he retires.
